We have deep roots in commercial shipping, marine insurance, incident response and crisis management, including hostage negotiation.
Our capabilities include the experience, means and methodologies for understanding and interacting with difficult / complex environments, and for conducting investigations, representations, mediation and problem solving on the ground in sensitive and difficult situations and places.
Our approach is careful and incremental to ensure that we do not act prematurely before the circumstances are as clear as possible. We have an instinctive understanding of the nuanced relationships between ship owners, P&I Clubs and market insurers, P&I correpondents, port agents and third party stake holders (port authorities etc.). We resolve matters discreetly and pragmatically, in a non-partisan and non-confrontational way without displacing your own team and representatives. We create insight and options but leave you in control of your own negotiation.
Astbury Marine Services & Associates (AMSA) was founded by Peter Astbury. Peter’s early career was in ship agency and ship broking in the Far East. Between 1990 and 2002, he worked for the managers of one of the leading International Group P&I Clubs where he became an Area Director. For the last decade he has worked as a contingency response consultant, mediating disputes for ship operators and their insurers on the front line, typically in some of the world’s most challenging jurisdictions. In 2008 he was one of a small team of technical experts advising the UN Secretary General’s Somalia Representative on piracy.
